Celebrating a Legacy, Rebuilding Memories: Andy Fredlund Photography Returns to Ft. Myers Beach After 50 Years

Ft. Myers Beach, FL - For half a century, Andy Fredlund's photography has been an integral part of Ft. Myers Beach, meticulously documenting its history and vibrant spirit since 1975. Now, even after the destructive force of Hurricane Ian in 2022 threatened to erase local memory, Andy's foresight in safeguarding his original 1975 negatives ensures that the past will not be forgotten. As Ft. Myers Beach rebuilds, a demand for authentic historical imagery from waterfront restaurants seeking to enrich the tourist experience has emerged.
This year marks the reopening of Andy Fredlund's photography business, offering a rich archive of historical images in various formats, including striking wall murals of the iconic Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Fleet. These images will not only decorate local spaces but also stand as a powerful symbol of the community's enduring strength.

Marie Olsen, Media Director for FMB. Photos, shares her enthusiasm: "Our 50-year local presence and exceptional collection of original images uniquely position us to support local businesses with their media campaigns and contribute to the resurgence of tourism in Lee County and Ft. Myers Beach."
The reopening of Andy Fredlund's photography business promises to infuse Ft. Myers Beach with a sense of nostalgia and genuine connection to its past, captivating the hearts of residents and visitors alike.

Life After Fort Myers Beach

Andy’s photography career did not fade away when he moved from FMB. He continued to perfect his craft, capturing the same caliber of captivating images while traveling throughout the US. Having lived in France for several years in his youth, Andy already had a taste and feel for the culture of Europe. Several years ago, he began to explore opportunities to use his "Every picture should tell a story!" guiding principle that he applies to the images he captures. Italy became the country of choice for Andy's exploration.
Since deciding to focus on Italy, Andy has immersed himself in the rich cultural tapestry of the country. His work has evolved to include a diverse range of subjects, from the bustling streets of Rome to the romantic atmosphere of Venice. On a recent visit to Rome, Andy was photographing a historical church when two American priests who were returning from lunch introduced themselves and offered him a tour, not only of the Church but of the adjoining Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas as well. A deep friendship was formed that day and a few months later Andy was invited to return for an intimate 3-day event that included VIP access to The Vatican, as well as many other historic locations throughout Rome associated with the Catholic Church. Stunning does not begin to describe the things that he saw and he did his best to capture them through his lens. Andy's keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects have earned him recognition and admiration in the photography community.
In addition to his travels, Andy has also been involved in various photography projects and exhibitions. His work has been featured in numerous galleries and publications, showcasing his unique perspective and storytelling ability. Andy's dedication to his craft and his passion for photography continue to drive him to explore new horizons and capture the beauty of the world through his lens.
Andy’s journey continues, and he continues to set himself apart from his peers by embracing current photography technology that elevates his images above all others.

Our Guiding Vision

Inspired by the timeless artistry of the Old Masters, both in painting and photography, my creative journey began in the dynamic world of 1970s photojournalism. Covering political campaigns, including President Gerald Ford's, offered invaluable early experiences. Partnering with David Kennerly, President Ford's Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, during his Florida visits provided unparalleled training and shaped my perspective.

Now, celebrating 50 years behind the lens, a recent reflection on past images has brought a profound realization: the essence of photography, and perhaps life itself, lies in the concept of time – far beyond mere fractions of a second.

After years in diverse business environments following my education, my inherent creative spirit beckoned me back. I discovered true fulfillment in capturing evocative and personal images. Immersing myself in numerous workshops over the years has been akin to stepping back in time, allowing me to walk the very landscapes and photograph in some of the same locations that inspired artistic giants across the globe.
Time. While not simply shutter speeds, it is the grander notion of time and its profound relevance to both photography and life that resonates deeply. Though its mysteries are vast, one truth is undeniable: time is finite. This year's passing of dear friends serves as a stark reminder of its fleeting nature. Our existence, precious as it is, will one day conclude. Everything eventually ends.

My photographs often mirror my perception of the world, a process of creation I find deeply absorbing. Rooted in the diverse places I've encountered, my work gains an initial direction, yet the images evolve organically. Through the interplay of various lenses and lighting techniques, and with a strong inclination towards Chiaroscuro, I forge an intimate connection with each photograph. There is an undeniable magic in being fully present, capturing a transient moment.

And so, with the precious time remaining, I choose to shift my focus from the abstract notion of time itself to the tangible reality of moments. These moments are what truly matter, and they are what our cameras are entrusted to preserve. This singular frame, this captured instant, distinguishes photography from the extended narrative of video. I embrace this challenge.

Ultimately, a viewer's experience of my art is deeply personal. I offer a starting point, an invitation to an interactive journey that transports them to their own unique and meaningful space. It is a privilege to create such a connection.

My work is honored to be held in both private and corporate collections.
